UPDATE: BRECKENRIDGE SKI RESORT IS OPENING EARLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY A DECADE! FIRST CHAIR IS AT 9AM ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2018. SEE YOU ON THE SLOPES!
We can hardly believe how fast the past year has flown by but we couldn’t be more excited to say that the best time of year is upon us! Who’s ready for fresh powder days, chairlift rides with friends, mid-day beer breaks at Vista Haus or 10-Mile Station, après at the base or around quaint downtown, and evening hot tub sessions to relax those sore, sore muscles!
Opening weekend is in just a few short days, are you ready?! First chair is at 9 am on November 9, 2018. Mark. Your. Calendars.
Breckenridge is known to throw a party, not just Friday through Sunday, but we like to think we’re up for a good time any day of the week. Opening weekend is no exception and in fact, at the top of the list when it comes to favorite weekends here in town.
Shops and restaurants will have recently re-opened after mud-season, Denverites will power up the I-70 corridor to chase that fresh pow, and locals will toast to Ullr, who has graced our mountains with fluffy layers of snow.
THE LOW DOWN
Opening Day at Breckenridge Ski Resort begins at 8am at the free BreckConnect Gondola. Scurry up the gondola to the Base of Peak 8 and chow down on complimentary waffles from the new Waffle Shop – a new restaurant debuting this ski season over at The Maggie!
Get your groove on with DJ DC spinning music on the snow by the Colorado SuperChair. Near 9 a.m., Breck’s Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, John Buhler, will begin the countdown to first chair and greet guests in the crowd.
Buhler will also recognize and honor a local Veteran and introduce the singing of the National Anthem performed by the Summit County High School choir.
At 9 a.m. sharp the Colorado SuperChair will move to life, officially kicking-off the Breckenridge winter ski and snowboard season!
Throughout the day, grab a snack at Robbie’s Tavern and bask in the tunes provided by Brothers of Brass band, a southern brass-band from Denver that will bring New Orleans street music to Breckenridge.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT APRÈS…
If you haven’t been to a happy hour in Breckenridge or one of the local watering holes, consider yourself in for a treat! Check out or roundup of great happy hours here!
Long before I moved to the town of Breckenridge, Mi Casa was always THE après-ski spot.
Located a hop skip and jump from the base of Peak 9, Mi Casa’s famous margaritas flow stronger than the mighty Colorado River. A house or “casa” marg will run you a mere $5. After two, you may, or may not, need that third.
If margaritas don’t tickle your fancy, the friendly staff at Mi Casa will gladly bring you a Mexican brew of Tecate or Modelo for just $2!
The buzzing cantina will be filled to the brim with apres skiers and snowboarders, shuffling around in their gear still dusted with freshies from the mountain.
Happy hour seating is a free for all on a first come, first serve basis. Don’t let the possibility of a small wait deter you from Mi Casa’s happy hour — chips, salsa and trays of baked nachos hold hungry diners over until they order a round of $5 happy hour tacos.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Colorado if you didn’t visit at least one of the 347 breweries Colorado offers. A local staple since 1990, Breck Brewery’s snacks & suds are hard to beat. Grab half-priced beer inspired apps, Sunday through Thursday this spring break.
Agave wheat beer shrimp or the beer cheese fries with savory candied bacon are just two favorites from a plethora of appetizers to choose from.
The brewery is a great spot to catch the latest game or follow March Madness championships streaming live from San Antonio!
This place brews a type of beer for just about every person and every palate. Bartenders won’t let you stay thirsty for long. Cans, bottles and over 10 beers on tap offer just about everything from a 4.4% Agave Wheat, 8.2% Double IPA and the occasional 13% Sexy Motor Oil barrel aged brew.
Draft brews are $2 off during the brewery’s daily happy hour from 3pm-6pm. Don’t forget to ask about the “rotating taps” there just might be something special and unique for you to try out!
There are few things worse than going to a restaurant that doesn’t have food options you can eat. We love Après Handcrafted Libations because they let you bring food from home or any restaurant in town to enjoy with your drink!
This trendy drinking spot is family owned and operated and the warm atmosphere emits an energy that will keep you cozied up with your best friends into the evening. A watering hole with an extensive menu, happy hour wine and drafts will save you $2 per drink to spend on the next round!
For those underage or on the wagon, Après Handcrafted Libations always has fresh non-alcoholic ginger beer on tap and Colorado craft sodas.
Entertainment is of the old-fashioned kind – games, music, and great company! What better place to enjoy après-ski than a spot named Après?
When you just don’t feel like braving the gondola line quite yet but are thirsty for an après-drink, head to Robbie’s Tavern. Without a doubt, Robbie’s boasts the best après view. A slopeside facing outdoor patio provides a handful of tables for you and your friends to plop down and relax!
You might have already stopped by Robbie’s for a mid-ski lunch break, but when three o’clock rolls around, the deals are on! Take $2 off select appetizers — chips and salsa, savory pretzel knots, chicken fingers, and LOADED fries.
Discounted drinks are flowing with $2 off house wines, $1 off draft beers and well cocktails.
As you watch skiers take their final run in for the day, watch out for snow spray as they slide in to the base — Robbie’s Tavern is that close to the action. After a few drinks, that time of day will roll around when the sun begins to set behind glorious Peak 8. Hang tight for this spectacular display – Colorado is famous for vibrant sunsets over our majestic mountain peaks!
